Antique Vase

This vase was brought to a recent Nancy Medina workshop by one of the participants. These hydrangeas and white rose were arranged in it. I love the subtle differences of the blues with that pop of white.

Orange and Copper

Did you know that orange is the only word for which there is no rhyming word ? I love trivia, my mind is full of worthless tidbits. Trivial pursuit is my favorite game although I am really bad in the sports and geography categories.this is a painting done at a Qiang Huang workshop.i learned a lot from this charming man.

Nancy's Flowers

I had the good fortune to go to a Nancy Medina workshop in October of last year. We had an abundance of fresh flowers to paint. This painting is from one of the photographs that I took during the workshop. We had a wonderful time learning from Nancy!

Geranium in the Sun

I have finally come to terms with myself. I have spent years comparing my work to others and feeling like I don't measure up. I heard the quote"comparison is the thief of joy" and it caused a lightbulb to go off in my head. I now know that my way of painting is MY way and I am thoroughly enjoying myself. My JOY can't be stolen!

Balance Sheet

I guess my mind is on preparing income tax returns this time of year. The title that came to me for this painting reflects what I was thinking about. Although this painting doesn't have equal elements on both sides;it is balanced by the weight of the different shapes. This is something intuitive. I have been doing this so long that I don't necessarily think about this when I compose the painting. When I do it wrong, it jumps out at me and it is back to the drawing board!

Kings in the Corner

While I was thinking of a title for this painting, the card game Kings in the Corner popped into my head.I really don't know why; maybe the fact that there were four blooms with"crowns".Anyway, I loved painting them in this cold month. We should see some of these in about 2 months here in the south. I can't wait!

Window Blue

I am fond of lots of color but this quiet scene is worthy of some subtle handling. Hydrangeas are so beautiful they could handle a black and white treatment,

Pineapple easel

I was thrilled to find this unusual easel to display my painting.I don't have a lot of wall space in my kitchen so this is a good solution to showcase art. It is also less expensive than framing!(Sunny Tulips 8x8 DPW auction)

Creek Side

When I go to museums and look at some of the older landscapes I appreciate the artistry but am often bored by these paintings. It is hard to make trees and skies have some intrigue or drama . In this painting I tried to change the point of view and colors to make the viewer come into the painting.

Walked as Lonely as a Cloud

This painting reminded me of the Wordsworth poem as I was painting. Although that poem contained daffodils,; the image of the thin clouds brings it to mind. My reference for this was mostly greens so I added a lot of color.I hate boring!

Lilacs at the Door

Maybe these beautiful blooms will warm us on this very cold day. Tomorrow morning there will be temps in the low teens here in Memphis. I spent 5 years of my childhood in extreme northern Maine. I know it was cold there but I don't have the memories of the cold. I do remember wearing snow pants and boots under my dress as I walked to the bus stop before school. When we got to school we left those items in the coat room and put them back on at the end of the day.It is funny that we weren't allowed to wear pants back then.It would have been a lot more practical!

Amber Bottles

I really like these amber colored bottles. They were set up on an outdoor table in the summer. On this very cold day in January they add a little warmth. Happy 2014. Now that We don't write checks very often, I barely got used to writing 2013. Time flies!
